With nearly 100 lives saved, National Army military nurse Burbano is recognized as the top performer in the MEDAC course in the United States

During a military operation in a rural area of Santa Rosa, in southern Bolívar, a career soldier wounded by a sniper suffered a life-threatening chest injury; every second was critical. Amid the tension of combat, a medical evacuation was carried out, during which he was stabilized and transported to receive specialized care.

Today, professional soldier John Cartagena Serna is still alive, and that episode remains etched in the memory of Lieutenant Juan Pablo Burbano Argoti, a 30-year-old military medic from the municipality of Buesaco, Nariño, who was recently recognized as a Graduate of Honor. He earned first place in Advanced Combat Medical Care during the MEDAC Course, held in the United States.

“Every evacuation is different, but they all have one thing in common: behind every soldier is a life that depends on our decisions and a family waiting for him to return home,” the officer summarizes, reflecting on an experience that now totals more than 89 medical evacuations in areas of operations.

The MEDAC Course, developed in accordance with U.S. Army standards, strengthens military personnel’s capabilities to provide advanced medical care in combat scenarios and respond effectively to highly complex situations.

This international recognition adds to another significant achievement the officer attained two years ago, when he placed first in an international competition held in Mexico, further solidifying a career marked by professional excellence and a dedication to service.

For the National Army, training personnel who are highly skilled in operational medicine and medical evacuation is a fundamental capability for preserving the lives of soldiers as they carry out their mission. The story of Lieutenant Juan Pablo Burbano Argoti demonstrates that preparation, knowledge, and commitment can make the difference between life and death.

Today, his name is a source of pride for Colombia on the international stage, but his greatest achievement remains helping more soldiers return home alive.
