The officer, with more than 33 years of service in the military and over 30 military decorations, will lead operations in 41 of the 42 municipalities in the department of Cauca.
The command transfer ceremony for the 29th Brigade of the National Army took place on the parade ground of the General José Hilario López Military Headquarters in the city of Popayán. The ceremony was presided over by the commander of the Third Division, Brigadier General Javier Hernando Africano López, accompanied by civil and military authorities from the region.
Brigadier General Alirio Aponte Sepúlveda, following an outstanding operational tenure, handed over command to Brigadier General Diego Jaramillo Muñoz, who assumed leadership of this strategic unit with a commitment to continue working for the security and stability of Cauca.During his more than 15 months in command, Brigadier General Aponte’s tenure was characterized by the promotion of offensive operations in areas of high sensitivity for regional security, such as the Pan-American Highway, the Colombian Massif, and northern Cauca. Under his leadership, the brigade focused its efforts on weakening illegal structures, disrupting their criminal economies, and strengthening institutional action in territories historically affected by violence.
The new commander assumes this position with a solid professional background and extensive experience in command, training, special operations, and leading strategic units.His academic background includes studies in Military Sciences and Logistics Management, as well as the Executive Management Program; he also holds specializations in Logistics Management and National Security and Defense, and master’s degrees in National Security and Defense, Inter-American Defense and Security Sciences, and Strategy and Geopolitics. This background strengthens his leadership capacity and strategic vision to assume high-level responsibilities within the institution.
Throughout his career, he has held positions of particular importance, including commander of the 31st Jungle Brigade, commander of the Vulcano Task Force, commander of the Training and Retraining Brigade, commander of the Lancero School, commander of the 41st Infantry Battalion 41 General Rafael Reyes, as well as the Commando Training Battalion; he has also served in international settings as a Master Instructor for the United States Army and in strategic positions such as Executive Inspector of the Military Forces.
His resume also reflects extensive training in military and operational courses, as well as numerous decorations and awards that reflect a career built on discipline, leadership, merit, and commitment to the National Army’s constitutional mission; among which the Order of Military Merit Antonio Nariño, the Order of Military Merit José María Córdova, the Military Medal of Valor, the Medal of Public Order, and the Silver Cross in Special Operations stand out.
The challenges that Brigadier General Diego Jaramillo Muñoz will undertake will focus on strengthening security along the Pan-American Highway, maintaining the offensive against criminal structures operating in Cauca, and consolidating the institutional presence in areas where these organizations seek to intimidate the population, disrupt mobility, and destabilize the territory. Added to this is the goal of continuing to build the trust of communities through legitimate military action that is accessible and respectful of human rights and international humanitarian law.
The National Army reaffirms its commitment to protecting Colombians and defending the constitutional order. Under the new command, the 29th Brigade will continue to deploy its operational and human capabilities to counter threats, protect the civilian population, and contribute to stability, governance, and peace in Cauca.Source:
