Colombian Army commemorated 63th anniversary of their participation in Korean War
October 16, 2013
In 1950, the Colombian Army became part of 16 armies fighting for independence and freedom of South Korea. An infantry battalion composed by 1060 courageous soldiers and a war frigate were the contribution of the South American nation in the Far East.
It is important to highlight that by this time, these valorous warriors not only faced unknown climatic, geographic and atmospheric conditions but also they were entering bipolar struggles part of Cold War and contention strategies.
On one hand North Korea was supported by the Peoples Republic of China helped by the Soviet Union and on the other hand, South Korea was supported by the United States and UN. It is important to remember that the Korean Peninsula had been occupied by Japan, which after its surrender before the United States during the Second World War after the nuclear retaliation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki resulting from Pearl Harbor attack, abandoned the Korean territory and it became under control of the two great powers in that time: USA and the Soviet Union.
The two powers unceasingly disputed the world hegemony; therefore, the communist ideology in North Korea and the democratic ideal of South Korea caused the Korean Peninsula become divided at 38 Parallel, which produced the current division of this sector.
However, beyond the geopolitical context that the COLAR soldiers helped to defend, and apart from the heroic heritage that they wrote in universal history records with the Colombia Battalion No.1, we exalt the gallantry of these courageous warriors who fought for democracy and freedom of a people, and today, 63 years later, we proudly honor this participation.
This is the reason why the Colombian Army HQ, in honor of these 1060 troops taking part in the first territorial and ideological fight of the Cold War, performed and ceremony where we all prayed for those heroes who are a living proof of that War.
And, for those heroes who rest in peace, we prayed for their souls because thanks to their supreme sacrifice, today, South Korean people sings victory and freedom anthems.
