To be a professional soldier is an honor for many men that belong to the glorious Colombian Army who with their own life defend all the national territory, so that thousands of Colombians could live in peace in each their homes.
Daily the soldiers face difficult situations due to their important work, defend the democracy against diverse illegal armed groups, like the case of the Professional Soldier Haroldo Pinzon who was wounded in combat by rifle impacts on the past March 31.
This soldier from the Mobile Brigade No. 5, Counterguerrillas No. 44 Battalion, on the past March 25 was getting ready together with his company to carry out a very risky operation; to enter to a Farc 10th column encampment, terrorists that offend at the west of the Country.
"It was Saturday morning, we left with three Companies from the Navas Pardo Counterguerrillas Battalion to the base in Polo Nuevo, from that point we should walk for several days towards the place known as Las Filipinas, Tame municipality jurisdiction (Arauca) ", place where they should complete the mission.
Amid the jungle the troop carefully advanced towards the objective, all the soldiers were in alert to any strange movement because it was a dangerous operation.
It was around 11:00 am, Haroldo was his companyâs pointer, only a few meters lacked to arrive to the encampment, suddenly they began to observe strange movements amid the deep jungle, when seeing the threat so close the combats began that lasted approximately 24 hours, the squad and the guerillas fighters began to shoot at the same time, and it is there where he received three bullet impacts in his legs.
He fell amid the crossed fire, when the subversives saw him they tried to approach quickly to take from him the rifle and to kill him, he thought "they are going to kill me" he looked forward and the only thing that observed was guerilla fighters running around him.
"With the fear and the desperation that I felt because I thought that they were going to murder me, I crawled to reach my rifle, I took it and I began to shoot", he was in the floor wounded trying to defend himself in order to remain alive with the force and the value that characterizes the soldiers.
When he believed that he was safe after avoiding the guerillas fighters to approach, a grenade appeared near his face, when he sow it he got scared but fortunately it didn't explode, "I felt as if I lost the air when I saw the grenade, some instants past and I realized it didnât work, I breathed deeply and I gave thanks to God to be alive."
After some minutes he saw more guerrilla fighters approaching who detected him "in that moment I was practically dead but the soldiers who were behind reacted very fast to avoid that the subversive could kill me."
When being rescued by his âLanzasâ the Companyâs male nurse quickly approached to give him the first aids, when being alone Soldier Pinzon thought in keeping calm waiting to be evacuated as soon as possible from the area.
Amid the combat "the sergeant that commanded the platoon was murdered the same as one of my friends, it hurt to me a lot when I knew that he died in the hospital during the surgery, at the same time during the confrontation some of my partners were also wounded."
Inspite of all this, the company gave as a result the drop of some guerilla fighters that were in the encampment, "we saw how they fell when they came closer in mass, but unfortunately only it was possible to recover the body of a terrorist."
With the report of the wounded the air support arrived transferring them to Tame, after the medical care received in this place they were remitted to the Military Hospital.
In this place they gave him the bad news, they had to amputate him the two legs, the wounds were infected by the ammunition, "at the beginning it was very hard to see how my life changed from one instant to the other, I felt sad and without desires of continuing living."
Fortunately he has known how to assimilate the situation thanks to his relatives, friends and the doctorâs support; he comments that they are the people that have given him a hope of life. âThe only thing that I am waiting for is to recover to be with the people that loves me and to live in peace."
This man like many others has given a part of him putting in risk its life, in operations in several jungles and mountains in Colombia to offer to us a better future, with harmony so that the thousands of Colombian people can live peacefully in their homes.
Now the Professional Soldier Haroldo Pinzon only expects to carry on with his life, and of something he is sure, is that if he had completely recovered after being wounded, he would had continued using the uniform to protect our Country feeling proud of being a homeland soldier.
