"To be combat male nurse is a risky and brave mission helping
their pals to remain calm and to give life hope in moments of panic."
The professional soldier Luís Fernando Gómez Vásquez during his four years in the army has been a combat male nurse, he was able to help many of his partners that were injured in confrontations against the subversives.
Being part of the CT Eduardo Carrascal Counterguerrillas No. 84 Battalion’s 'Bayonet' Company, he received six shots in one of his arms and in his left leg, being one of the survivors of the combats where 29 soldiers were killed.
On December 27 2005 they were patrolling in suburbs of the Serrania de la Macarena (Meta) near to the Palestina village, soldier Gómez remembers, "suddenly many guerillas fighters appeared 600 approximately against us that were only two counterguerrillas platoons."
At 5:45 am the combat started, “all of us were in alert because in previous days, confrontations had already been sustained in La Macarena surroundings", after a few minutes the first wounded was reported I ran towards an improvised house to aid him."
"... Time passes very slowly in those moments, more or less three hours of combat had passed when the air support arrived, the troop was fighting front to front, practically jumbled, and the nearest company was around five minutes away, but they could not arrive because there were two many guerilla fighters."
"More wounded began to arrive with serious injuries; it was possible to stabilize four of them amid many shots."
Also in the moment in which all the soldiers were refolded to defend themselves from the enemy, I felt totally alone, I believe I had the opportunity to escape, but "I didn't do it because I had my wounded pals and my criteria as combat male nurse was to take care of them. "
Amid the calm that all combat male nurse should transmit to calm the wounded, he also remembers that one of them saved his life.
The injured soldier said to me “kid get out of there that they’re going to kill you", when I ran, I a shot hit the place where I was leaning.
Several minutes past I was detected by a guerilla fighter that secretly approached, in the exchange of shots I received six impacts in my arm, he was also wounded and shouted " there is one Alive here ! ", " I only thought in throwing the rifle so that he will think that he had killed me."
Faking that it was dead and thinking that it would be finished off as they did with my wounded partners saying to them! Die as dogs! At the time that they took from them their weapons, because for these terrorists is more important a rifle that a human being’s life. I felt a strong pain in my body, because I received two more shots.
However today telling to you these facts, oppresses him more the pain of seeing how they murdered many of his friends, more than the pain he felt in that moment.
My last living opportunity
In the last moment the terrorist tried to take me off my vest, I thought in my survival, using the last grenade that I had kept in my pocket, I managed to release the lock and launch it... among the roar I listened to the screams and the escape of many of them.
Finally, "they left my strength were every minute less I wasn’t even able to at least inject myself serum, I waited and after a while a Company evacuated me to nearby hill."
He thought he was going to die alone, he saw blood everywhere, when I arrive at the hospital I present two heart attacks, “fortunately God didn’t want to take me with him yet, for that reason today I am telling to you this experience”.
"He will never stop being a combat male nurse", for him is a great satisfaction to be able to serve with this mission to whom now are anonymous heroes the same as him, men that stand out and offer their own life to defend to the Colombian people.
He will always remember this experience, he will continued with his university studies to help the Country that needs the strength and the will of men capable to take a risk, as soldier Gómez in the battle field did in his moment.
